Tesla has revealed New Zealand pricing and specification for the long-awaited Model Y, as well as announcing that first deliveries of the mid-size SUV will start arriving here between August and November this year.

The Model Y is available in two guises, with prices starting at $76,200 for the entry RWD model and topping out at $108,900 for the AWD Performance model, representing a $3000 bump over the equivalent entry Model 3 sedan, while the Performance asks an $8000 premium for the SUV shape.

Tesla started delivering the Model Y two years ago, now its 2023 model is under investigation from US transport authorities.

The single motor RWD entry model will, of course, be eligible for the $8625 Clean Car rebate and comes standard with 19-inch alloy wheels, with 20s being optional. It will accelerate to 100kph in 6.9 seconds and will offer a WLTP range of 455km.

The dual motor AWD Performance model misses out on the rebate, but gains 21-inch alloy wheels as standard and a range of 514km, while ripping to 100kph in 3.7 seconds.

Like the Model 3, both versions of the 5-seater Model Y come standard with an all black interior, with a two-tone black and white interior being optional. New Zealand won’t get the seven-seat version, to begin with at least.

Again, like the Model 3, the Y features a panoramic glass roof, while packing more cargo space than the sedan, with a frunk and split-folding second-row seats providing a total of 2158 litres.

Tesla will offer a tow-bar as an optional service-installed accessory, but says it won’t be available until ‘early 2023’ at this stage. The Model Y will be capable of towing 1600kg on a braked trailer or 750kg unbraked.

As with all Teslas, Full Self-Driving capability is an $11,400 option and prices don’t include on-road costs, which will add a further $2043 to the total price.
