New Zealand’s best-selling vehicle is getting a big power bump for its upcoming next-gen guise, with Ford New Zealand confirming that the V6 diesel version of the Ranger will pump out a healthy 184kW of power when it launches here in the middle of this year.

Ford New Zealand has revealed that the 3.0-litre turbo diesel V6 that replaces the venerable 3.2-litre turbo diesel inline five will not only pack 37kW more than the old engine (which produces 147kW), but also a whopping 130Nm more torque (470Nm versus 600Nm) that channelled through a full-time 4WD system will make it an absolute beast.

Ford shares ten things we need to know about the new third-generation T6 Ranger ute.

“We’re offering this engine specifically because some customers told us they wanted more power and torque for towing and extreme off-roading,” said Pritika Maharaj, Ranger and Everest program manager.

“We did a lot of application calibration and validation work in both the US and Australia to make sure it would meet the needs of Ranger and Everest customers.

“When you drive a Ranger with the V6 turbo diesel, it feels like a much bigger truck. And it feels strong in the sense that it's got plenty of power and torque, which is exactly what our customers told us they wanted.”

Ford has yet to reveal emission figures for the Ranger yet, but we wouldn’t expect the V6 version to be getting a rebate under the Clean Car scheme…

Ford will continue to offer the existing 2.0-litre biturbo four-cylinder diesel that produces 154kW and 500Nm in the next-gen Ranger, while the 2WD entry-level XL will also be available with a single turbo version of the 2.0-litre engine, packing 125kW/405Nm. The XL will also be the only model of Ranger to get the six-speed automatic transmission, with the rest of the range using the 10-speed auto first seen here in the Mustang.

The ranger-topper, however, is the Raptor that packs a 3.0-litre twin-turbo petrol V6 that Ford New Zealand has confirmed will produce a towering 292kW of power and 583Nm of torque, a massive increase in power over the current model Raptor that packs the 2.0-litre biturbo diesel four.

All models of Ranger will have a braked towing capacity of 3500kg, except the Raptor that drops 1000kg (it can haul 2500kg braked) for the ability to do sweet, sweet jumps. Ford New Zealand says that pricing will be announced closer to the launch date, and it expects the first arrivals to begin in the middle of this year.
