Next-gen Subaru WRX confirmed to come with a manual

Wednesday, 18 August 2021

Subaru has teased the new generation of WRX, and it looks like it will definitely come with a manual transmission.

The new model is still a while away, but Subaru is keeping interest with a new teaser video and photo. The photo shows a fairly nondescript sedan covered in dust, which implies Subaru is keeping outlandish styling to a minimum, although a bonnet scoop is likely.

We also get a glimpse of a manual shifter being slammed into third as well as some tasty burbly engine exhaust notes. It’s expected the WRX will get the turbocharged 2.4-litre flat-four already seen in other Subaru models, like the North American Ascent, Legacy and Outback where it makes 194kW/376Nm.

Subaru might be aiming to create a bit of a sleeper with the new WRX, going by this dusty profile.

The WRX will probably see that pushed closer to the current STI's 221kW/407Nm figures, leaving room for the spicier of the Subaru pair to reach towards 300kW, rivalling the Toyota Supra and soon-to-be-revealed Nissan 400Z.

A while ago, Japan’s Car Sensor said the WRX’s existing CVT is only rated at up to 400Nm of torque. What Subie will do with it remains to be seen. Toyota is offering input into the hi-po models so Subaru may be looking into taking one of the larger brand’s automatics, like the eight-speeder found in the Lexus LX 570.

The WRX will almost certainly make the jump to the Subaru Global Platform, which should improve straight line stability, noise and vibration in the cabin as well as comfort. Should Subaru opt for an automatic in the WRX/STi, we will also likely see an improved raft of safety equipment, like adaptive cruise control and other active aids.

As for when we could expect to see the new WRX and STI, Subaru previously said the New York Auto Show would be the time and place but, considering that show has been cancelled thanks to you-know-what, it’s unclear when the dust will settle.

There’s always the chance Subaru will do a simple live-stream for the reveal but for the moment, we’ll have to wait a little bit longer.
