Reborn Lamborghini Countach leaked ahead of official reveal

Friday, 13 August 2021

The new Lamborghini Countach has been leaked ahead of its official reveal, and while we’re unsure if these are completely legit, the photos match up with what has been teased from Lamborghini and look similar to other official imagery from the Italian brand.

It appears the remade Countach is based on the earlier LP400, evident in the lack of big rear wing on the new model. The photos show an original Countach in the background for comparison. There may be hidden active aerodynamics in the new model but, at least for the moment, there won’t be any extra aero parts.

Sadly, there aren’t any pop-up headlights. Thanks, safety regulations.

The front of the new Countach may not have pop-up headlights, but it’s certainly still striking.

There are massive triangular vents on the sides, the various vents and intakes seem to be more planned than added after the fact (the now-iconic vents on the original Countach weren’t part of the original design but needed to prevent engine overheating).

The big vents on the original Countach were required after the design had been largely finalised, due to an overheating engine.

Around the back are slim taillights that look vaguely like the LP400’s units but massively slimmed down, with three lights per cluster taken directly from the Sian.

The Sian links don’t stop there either, as the Countach 2.0 is expected to use the same powertrain as the ultra-limited model. That would be a 6.5-litre V12 paired with a gearbox-mounted electric motor that draws its power from supercapacitors instead of traditional lithium-ion batteries.

It might sound a bit weird but Lamborghini boss, Stephan Winkelmann, has gone on record in saying he think supercapacitors are a “bridge technology”, even though they sound far more futuristic and advanced than “a battery”. Apparently, they don’t reduce emissions enough. But the massive V12 is okay…

A photo had already been leaked to Instagram from the customer-only Unica app that confirms the car’s full name will be the Countach LPI 800-4. That means an output of roughly 800hp (596kW) and all-wheel drive.

LPI apparently stands for Longitudinale Posteriore Ibrido, which denotes the powertrain's longitudinal mounting, its location aft of the cabin, and its hybrid nature.

The new Countach should debut in full in the next few days, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the original model, so we’ll know more shortly. Apparently, just 112 units will be built. Expect each build slot to cost well over the million-dollar mark.

That last point is probably the worst part about this car – there’s a slim chance anyone will actually see one on the road. Original Countachs float around fairly often – in fact, there’s one on Trade Me right now for a bargain $674,990 – but it’s hard to see this new version making it out of many collector’s garages.
