Honda preparing send-off NSX Type S
Thursday, 5 August 2021
Honda's NSX supercar has been around since 2016 (well, overseas at least) and flagging sales have meant time is nearly up for the mid-engined hybrid beasty. However, it seems Honda still has one trick up its sleeve – an ultra-potent Type S.
The limited-run model will be officially revealed in the next few weeks, but Honda has teased a few of the new features that will be available.
Subtle new external design cues include grey exterior paint with black trim, red brake calipers, and special Type S badging, while there will also be a red engine cover and a numbered build plaque for each of the 350 units.
Without going into specifics, Honda has said there will be 'enhancements to performance and design with the goal to create a model that goes beyond all NSX models that came before'. Considering the standard NSX makes 428kW, we would expect a power increase to break the 447kW (600hp) mark.

Expect suspension and brake upgrades to go with the extra power as well. One of the teasers shows a smokey rear end, which could hint at a rear-drive drift mode for the normally AWD supercar.
Of the 350 units made, 30 are reserved for Japanese customers, with the other 320 sent around the world. We’re betting on none making it here, as Honda never sold the NSX locally. There were plans announced back in 2018, with a full launch planned, but Honda NZ cancelled proceedings at the last minute, with a spokesperson saying at the decision was down to “reconsidering the regional Asia/Oceania NSX strategy”.
The Australian launch did go ahead but the NSX never sold well across the ditch. That could be due to its massive price of nearly half a million dollars…
Aussie sales stopped last year after precisely zero sales in 2020 and just three in 2019. Global production of the NSX is set to end in December 2022.
