Genesis teases possible production version of the Essentia

Monday, 29 March 2021

Genesis has uploaded a teaser video to its YouTube channel. This on its own wouldn’t really be newsworthy but the video in question shows off what looks to be an electric coupe. Could this be the production debut of the gorgeous Essentia concept from a few years ago?

Like all teasers, it’s hard to tell. The 30-second video shows glimpses of a shadowy car with a long bonnet, twin-stripe LED light motifs similar to those seen on the GV80 SUV and G80 four-door fastback.

The lights are present at the front and rear as well as cutting through the wheel arches into the front fender. It looks like the rear end has a small spoiler as well.

The Essentia concept featured similar lighting elements as this new concept.

There’s also a weird (but very cool) eyeball thing that flips around to reveal the gear selector and a stylish door panel. Meanwhile, the description of the video confirms the vehicle is all-electric.

The concept could be a coupe version of the G80 but, given the Essentia had similar ‘through-the-wheel’ lighting elements, concave rear end and flippy gear selector, we could be seeing it finally reach the production stage.

Genesis isn’t offering any major details but, given the brand’s relationship with Hyundai (and Kia), the car will probably ride on the E-GMP platform.

That means it will have top-spec electronic hardware, including an 800V battery system, more than 500km of range and a 0-100kmh time of around the three-second mark.

We’ll learn more when the concept debuts at the end of the month.
