Refreshed and powered-up Hilux revealed
Friday, 5 June 2020
Toyota has taken the wraps off the latest incarnation of its trusty workhorse, with changes ranging from new looks to more tech and improved output.
The updated looks comprise a new front end, with a larger grille and bumper as well as redesigned headlights and fresh wheel. Around back are new-look taillights too.
Interior changes are minimal, aside from a new 8-inch infotainment screen that supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, physical volume and tuning dials and a digital display nestled between the analogue dials.
The core of the Hilux hasn't changed much though, those changes will come with the next generation, due around 2023.

Buyers of the updated Hilux will get a tickled powertrain though, a new 2.8-litre turbodiesel pushing 150kW and 500Nm of torque. A 2.7-litre petrol engine is also available. There wasn't any mention of diesel particulate filters, however.
Towing capabilities have been improved too, with automatic 4x4 models matching similar manual utes with a 3.5-tonne maximum. Two-wheel drive vehicles are rated for 2.8 tonnes.
“A true Kiwi icon, the 2020 Hilux comes with comprehensive safety technology and performance enhancements that make it even better to drive for work or play,' said Neeraj Lala, COO of Toyota New Zealand.
'It is the most technologically advanced ute ever offered by Toyota.'
Tantalisingly, he added that a special launch edition Hilux inspired by the recent success of the Hilux Gladiator will be coming. 'A special custom-built Hilux for New Zealand customers and conditions.”
There aren't any details on that one just yet, but we're excited.
Final pricing is yet to be announced, as is when we can expect to see the new utes, though Aussie media reckons they'll dot down around August.
