Volkswagen launches its smallest SUV

Wednesday, 20 May 2020

Volkswagen has introduced its smallest SUV to New Zealand roads. Meet the T-Cross.

The T-Cross range offers four models - the $34,240 Life,  $38,490 Style and $39,990 1st Edition variants are powered all by a 1.0 TSI three-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine generating 85kW/200Nm.

Meanwhile, the top $43,490 R-Line model that will arrive in May packs an extra punch with a 1.5 TSI four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine producing 110kW / 250Nm.

The small SUV measures just over four metres long, 100mm shorter than the T-Roc. There's still enough space for five adult occupants though, as well as between 455 litres and 1281 litres of storage.

Safety is well accounted for, with driver assistance tech like autonomous emergency braking, pedestrian and cyclist monitoring, lane keep assist and blind spot monitoring all standard. It looks like active cruise control is an optional extra, though.

ANCAP recently awarded the T-Cross a five-star rating as well.

The T-Cross will join the T-Roc, Tiguan, Tiguan Allspace and Touareg as five different VW SUV options on the New Zealand market.

VW added that the ID.4 electric SUV will be selling here, though didn't offer any further details on that front.
