Lexus' first plug-in hybrid detailed
Thursday, 16 April 2020
Lexus is developing its first plug-in hybrid model, set to be an SUV based on the Toyota RAV4 Prime and named NX450+.
The name comes from a trademark application in Europe for several new variants of the NX crossover, which also includes a forthcoming NX350h.
It's believed the plus in the 450's name indicated PHEV status, with the underlying powertrain said to be the 2.5-litre four-pot supplemented by two electric motors found in the RAV4 Prime. In the Toyota, system power is rated at 225kW, enough for a 0-100kmh sprint in 5.8 seconds.
A 17.8kWh battery pack allows around 62km of all-electric driving, which should be enough for most urban errands.

Given the Lexus NX is close to the size and weight of the RAV4, performance and range should be very close.
We'd expect the Lexus to have a more upmarket interior and command a higher price, however.
Meanwhile, the RAV4 Prime should dot down before the end of the year. We're still waiting on price and final specification but the RAV4 Hybrid Limited asks $53k. The Prime will sit above as a flagship, potentially breaking the $60,000 mark.
It will come in two trims, SE and XSE. The former will be the base, while the XSE will be the more expensive choice with a two-tone exterior and contrasting black roof, vertical LED daytime running lights and 19-inch alloys. Both models will get the full Safety Sense driver assist package.
