New BMW M2 to usher in hotter 1 and 2 Series

BMW has reportedly given the go-ahead to build a new rear-drive M2, which will lead a new line-up of junior M models .

The second-generation M2 will retain its rear-drive layout thanks to a move to the CLAR architecture shared by the Z4 and it's Japanese cousin Supra. This platform will also underpin the M2 Gran Coupe, though this is unrelated to the FWD/AWD FAAR architecture-based M235i xDrive Gran Coupe. Confusing, we know. Sorry.

Power will come from a detuned version of the new M3/M4
Power will come from a detuned version of the new M3/M4's engine, reportedly sitting at around 315kW in base trim.

Basically, the proper M models will use the CLAR architecture while cooking 1 and 2 Series' (even those with M in the name) are based on the FAAR platform

Anyway, power for the new M2 will come from a detuned version of the S58 twin-turbo 3.0-litre straight six found in the forthcoming M3/M4. In the M2 it will around the 315kW mark, with Competition variants pushing output higher still.

BMW is also working on an M2 Gran Coupe and full-fat 1 Series, both of which will use a highly-tuned four-cylinder making close to 300kW.

BMW will still offer a six-speed manual as the default transmission, although an eight-speed automatic will be available as an option. The auto will be crucial for BMWs electrification plans, as the CLAR platform supports the addition of a 48-volt mild hybrid system.

This helps reduce emissions by letting the engine switch off while coasting and adds some power for quick launches.

Further tweaks will happen in the chassis department, with Autocar UK reporting extra stiffening coming through suspension strut tower-mounted beams front and rear, dynamic engine mounts and a wider track.

The M2 will look markedly different to the 2 Series, as the transversely mounted engine will necessitate a longer bonnet, pushing the cabin rearward. Expect more raunchy styling too, given this is a proper M car.

A four-door option will also be offered, called the M2 Gran Coupe, set to duke it out with the Mercedes-AMG CLA 45 S. This one won't get the S58 engine, instead using a highly tuned version of the M235i's four-cylinder. Expect around 300kW and an all-wheel drive system that can route all power to the rear wheels.

This engine will also power a full-fat 1 Series, which is yet to be named. One potential badge is 1 Series M Coupe, succeeding the car of the same name from 2011.

Nothing is official yet though. With any luck, we'll hear more as the year goes on. In the meantime, the front-wheel drive 2 Series is hitting New Zealand dealerships now.
