Alfa Romeo teases spicier Giulia GTA

Monday, 2 March 2020

We first heard rumblings of a hotter Alfa Romeo Giulia earlier this year but Alfa was quick to snuff them out. That was a bit of a bummer, considering the Italian marque was working on the revival of two iconic nameplates, the GTV and the 8C, before cancelling them in favour of more money-making SUVs.

However, now it looks like those earlier reports were more accurate than Alfa wanted us to think, as the manufacturer has teased a Giulia hotter than the current Quadrifoglio flagship.

The first teaser is a short video looking back into Alfa's motorsport history. Mentions of heritage, power and lightness are threaded through old footage of racing Alfas while the last part of the clip shows a triangular logo along with the Latin words Audentes Fortuna Iuvat (Fortune favours the bold).

The fastest Giulia you can buy is the Quadrifoglio. But not for much longer.

Autodelta, Alfa Romeo's racing division, uses a similarly shaped logo and was responsible for the original Giulia GTA of the 1960s. If Autodelta is involved with this new project, it would make sense to revive the GTA badge with the modern Giulia.

Another teaser image, also uploaded to the brand's Facebook page, shows an angular line with a series of small circles underlining it. You'd be forgiven for being a bit confused but the caption 'The pop rivets on the sides and on the fenders give the shell greater solidity and increase the car's stability' might help. You see, the original GTA came with aluminium outer body panels instead of steel and were pop-riveted to the inner steel panels.

More teasers have cropped up on the brand's social media, all pointing to the return of the GTA badge. Assuming the various captions speak the truth, we can expect more power, less weight and more aero.

Even better, the most recent image uploaded (at the time of writing) confirmed when we can expect to see the new Giulia. All the details should be available by this time tomorrow.
