Genesis crowned most reliable car brand by new study

Friday, 14 February 2020

Genesis, Hyundai's luxury sub-brand, has just topped the J.D. Power annual vehicle dependability study, despite it only existing for about four years.

The company has been trading as a standalone brand since late 2015 and only has four vehicles to its name - the G70, G80, G90 sedans and the GV80 SUV (due this year).

Hyundai New Zealand is still undergoing a market analysis to introduce the brand locally, hopefully we will see fruits of that this year.

Despite the small catalogue, J.D. Power's U.S-based survey found Genesis to be the brand with the most dependability, beating out Lexus, Porsche and Toyota.

Hopefully, 2020 will be the year we get to sample the rather attractive Genesis G70.

As for specific models, the G80 took top honours in the midsize premium category while the North American-only Toyota Avalon was the most reliable large car. The Honda Jazz won best small car while the Mazda MX-5 took the crown in the compact sports car segment.

Lexus' ES is the most reliable compact premium car while the Buick Regal (previously known as the Holden Commodore, RIP) topped the midsize segment.

In the SUV realm, Kiwi buyers wanting dependability over anything else will want to look at the Holden Equinox or Toyota's Land Cruiser Prado.

And, if you're considering a full-size truck, you probably won't be surprised to see the Ford F-150 and Chevrolet Silverado HD win accolades, as well as the Toyota Tundra and Nissan Frontier, although only the Chevy is available here.
