Details emerge on next-gen Subaru WRX

Subaru has revealed details on its upcoming WRX refresh, including what will be under the bonnet.
The performance icon will be powered by two engine options, one being the modest 150KW 1.8-litre turbocharged boxer seen in the Levorg Prototype, while the other will be a gruntier 2.4-litre flat-four making a reported 200kW/400Nm. That should be plenty to tear up local roads.
The latter engine is currently deployed in the North American Ascent and, interestingly, has previously been linked to the second-generation Toyota 86 (to be renamed GR86) and Subaru BRZ.
That could mean the coupe twins will get a detuned version in order to avoid treading on the WRX's toes. Alternatively, the GR86 and BRZ may get a different engine altogether.

As for transmission, reports are connecting a CVT tuned for sporty driving to the new WRX. The current model also packs a CVT, but is available with a six-speed manual. However there hasn't been any indication the next generation will retain the do-it-yourself shifter.
The WRX will be joined a few months after its debut by the faster-still STI variant, which should pack quite a bit of firepower. The existing model delivers 227kW and 407Nm so expect the new one to challenge the likes of the 250kW/500Nm GR Supra.
Under the skin will be Subaru's Global Platform, which should keep weight down to around the 1500kg mark. Power will be sent to all four wheels, in keeping with Subaru tradition.
There isn't a firm launch for the new WRX but we should have more information in the near future.
