Ford gets sideways at the 'Ring

Wednesday, 26 September 2018

While lap times of the legendary Nurburgring are becoming increasingly irrelevant as manufacturers pour millions of dollars into going faster than each other there, Ford has gone and done something far more interesting.

Rather than going for an outright lap record, the American company simply decided to go for 'spectacular' and unleashed Formula Drift champ Vaughn Gittin Jr. in his utterly mad 660kW supercharged Mustang around the full 20km Nordschleife.

Ford are saying that Gittin is the first person to drift the entire Nordschleife - which is very likely accurate - but they are remaining somewhat vague as to whether it was actually all in one go or not.

Never mind the lap time; how sideways did you get? Ford sets what we think should be the new standard at the Nurburgring.

The video above is the first in a series of four that Ford will be releasing, with a longer one coming in October some time that will hopefully shed some light on how the tyres held up (or not) to an entire sideways lap of the circuit.

This isn't the first time Gittin and Ford have attempted a drift run at the track - they tried earlier in the year, but inclement weather put the brakes on it.

Well, sort of, because while Gittin left the Mustang in the garage (because 'drifting in the rain is boring' according to the man himself), he did take an F-150 Raptor out on the wet track for a bit of fun instead. And that does look like fun..
