The Interislander cancelled all its Sunday sailings due to the wild weather lashing the upper half of the country.

Interislander posted a notice of the cancellation on Sunday morning, citing forecasts of winds over 100kmh and swells of five metres in the Cook Strait.

Though Monday’s sailings had not been cancelled on Sunday morning, Interislander said it looked like the severe weather would continue and that it would be “reassessing the forecast” to see if sailings could go ahead.

In the meantime, bookings were not being accepted for Monday morning, as there would be a backlog of passengers and vehicles.

Metservice meteorologist Peter Little said there had been gusts of up to 150kmh measured in the strait at the Brothers Islands, though the forecast did start to ease later in the evening.

“[The wind] does ease to around 30 knots this evening, but we do still see some swells, it rises to 3.5 metres about the south coast of Wellington today, and tomorrow easing to 2m.

“Certainly winds are expected to ease, but it takes a while for the swell to build up and it can take longer for it to settle down.”

Updates on Interislander sailings can be found on its website, Facebook page, or by calling its customer service line at 0800 802 802 between 8:00am and 5:00pm.
