Levin moves to recovery mode following extensive tornado damage

Tornado-striken Levin moved into recovery mode on Thursday, as Horowhenua District Council finish assessing the damage from last week’s extreme weather event.
Building advisors assessed 51 buildings for structural damage, of which 17 residential and three commercial buildings have been identified as unaccessible under red stickers.
An additional four buildings have restricted access under yellow stickers.
11 families or individuals were placed in the care of the welfare team, three still in emergency housing.

Council Chief Executive Monique Davidson said a range of support was available through many organisations, including Council.
Davidson said the majority of property clean-up was completed and kerbside pick-ups were now finished.
The Mayoral Relief Fund reached $263,461 in contributions and council received 13 applications.
The fund can help assist with damaged property, daily life essentials, costs not covered by insurance and counselling. Applications remain open until June 13 at 5pm.
An excess of 130 requests for help were also received from people and organisations impacted by Friday’s event.
