Save power and dine over candlelit dinner on Earth Day.
Save power and dine over candlelit dinner on Earth Day.

Today is Earth Day and even if it's just for 24 hours, here are 10 tips to earn your green halo:

1. BYO coffee mug to work. Instead of getting a takeaway cup, purchase a reusable cup to take with you. You might even get a discount from your local cafe.

2. Take the bus. Ditch the car – and the $20 parking fee –  and bus, walk or train to work instead.

3. Implement double-sided printing.  Set your printer settings to double sided, to save half the paper.

4. Switch off your switches. Take appliances off standby. The same goes for chargers. Both will still be using electricity if plugged in.

5. Use your leftovers. Some of the best (and most convenient) meals are made from leftovers, often a delicious lunch for the next day?

6. Change to an energy-efficient light bulb. Even if it is just one.

7. Carry your own water bottle. Don't buy a plastic bottled water today, but BYO BPA free bottle to work and refill during the day.

8. Do a cold wash. Set your washing machine temperature to cold and save on your power bill too.

9. Dine under candlelight. It's not only a great way to save on energy, but very romantic.

10. Turn off your computer at the end of the day.
