The small Canterbury town full of gorgeous villas and funky architectural gems
Saturday, 6 June 2026
Each week, we bring you our favourite open homes to hit up in a town or suburb near you. This week, our focus is on Geraldine. Whether you’re eager to buy, or simply a perpetual property peruser, you’ll find an open home worth taking a peek at here each Saturday morning.
About half an hour outside Timaru, an hour and a half hour south-west of Christchurch, is the small country town of Geraldine.
Probably best known as the birthplace of Kiwi food brand Barkers - the Barkers family farm is just outside town, and the Barker’s Food Store & Cafe is a popular spot with visitors - the town is also home to the Geraldine Vintage Car and Machinery Museum, the Talbot and Peel scenic reserves, and a few historical and architectural gems.
Among them is the 1910 villa at 260 Talbot St, on the edge of town.
Renovated to a high standard by its owner, the home has three bedrooms and two bathrooms in the main house, as well as a fully kitted out sleep out behind the main house.
'It gives options for extra income with Airbnb, a work from home office, or it's a place for extended family and multi-generational living,' says LJ Hooker listing agent Jane Stack.
'They've used quality materials and everything has been done to a high standard.'
The look is modern vintage, with a sleek, open plan living/dining/kitchen areas that open onto the back yard. The sleepout is a short walk away, and it’s all surrounded by manicured gardens. There’s even a thriving vege patch.
While it’s a short drive to the centre of town, it’s a nice quiet end of town.
'Geraldine is a lovely, easy place to live,' says Stack. 'It's got a great vibe and a lovely village.
“There's lots going on here. We've got lots of lovely boutique shops, and then you're only half an hour from Timaru and Ashburton, Christchurch an hour and a half, so you're still very handy. It's just this beautiful spot to live really.'
