If you’ve ever stared at a fridge full of random ingredients and thought, “What on earth can I make with this?”, you’re not alone. On the latest episode of The Girls Uninterrupted podcast, the hosts shared how they’re using ChatGPT - and it turns out the AI isn’t just for writing emails or uni essays.
“I don’t love ChatGPT. It took me a long time before I even tried using it,” admitted Tegan Yorwarth. “But I like it in the sense that it can help you in certain areas… you’re at the gym, don’t know what to do, ‘Hey, can I have an arm workout just using machines?’ It gives you a workout, gives you a warm-up time, everything.”
Caitlin Marett uses the tool to help plan her runs. Brodie Kane, on the other hand, isn’t a fan and says she hasn’t needed it at all - although she once amused herself by asking the app for a recipe using cottage cheese and three random ingredients.
The conversation soon turned to some of the more “unhinged” ways people are experimenting with the technology. Yorwarth shared a few examples she’d recently seen on TikTok:
- “I post pictures of people I hate and it roasts them.”
“Every night I have Chat tell me a bedtime story about me and the guy I’m into.”
“Took a picture of my room before cleaning it, and it told me exactly how to organise and clean it in the most effective way and in the least time.”
One tip in particular caught her attention: “I use it to get active coupon codes any time I shop online.”
But alongside the fun came some cautions. Marett pointed out that some people are using AI for therapeutic advice.
“Oh, see, that scares me,” said Yorwarth. “Essentially, ChatGPT is free. But therapy is not real therapy. So is it a good thing that people have access to something? I don’t know?”
She also worries about students relying on AI for assignments instead of thinking for themselves.
“You’re paying 40k to not have an education… you should be using your own brain, your own critical thinking.”
Despite these concerns, ChatGPT’s convenience is winning over more and more Kiwi users. A recent survey by IAB New Zealand found that almost half of New Zealanders have used ChatGPT, and 39% have tried an AI chatbot in place of a traditional search engine at least once.
