T4 Group says plans for a state-of-the-art Tier 4 data centre in Southland are on track despite recent uncertainty surrounding the DataGrid data centre.

The data centre could see Southland become a cheap, green hub for storing data and providing cloud computing services in New Zealand, Australia and beyond.

Stage one of the project is expected to commence between May and June, T4 Group chief operating officer David Simpson said.

“This is exciting for the region, as the majority of T4 Group is owned by Southlanders,’’ he said.

The company was currently negotiating a land purchase and had developed numerous international partnerships, which demonstrated a readiness to build a world-leading facility that would provide businesses and individuals with secure and sustainable data storage and processing.

“We’re thrilled to be bringing this level of security and uptime to the region and the project will also be a New Zealand first as there are no other Tier 4 data centres in the country.”

He said the company had a commitment to sustainability, which was evident in its innovative and eco-friendly approach to data centre construction and operation. Its geographic location and unique climate would significantly reduce its reliance on powered cooling systems, he said.

“Our data centres utilise the latest in energy-efficient technologies, significantly reducing energy consumption and carbon footprint,” Simpson said.

Meanwhile, Invercargill MP Penny Simmonds said she was pleased that plans to construct the data centre in Southland were on track.

“I support this project because of the tremendous potential it has for our province going forward.

“It will create employment during construction and once completed will position Southland at the forefront of this technology,’’ she said.
