Sky TV to sell large block of land in Mt Wellington

Sky TV’s office consolidation will free-up 26,500 square metres of land in a largely residential area of Mt Wellington.

Sky Television will sell a large plot of land in Mt Wellington where it has its sprawling Auckland campus and consolidate its office space, the company has announced.

The pay-TV and broadband firm plans to sell two of its three headquarter buildings along with 26,500 square metres of land, but will retain its remaining “Studio One” building at the site and look to lease new space for some of its 900 staff.

Sky’s headquarters is located in an area of Mt Wellington that is largely residential but Sky could not comment on whether there might be an opportunity to use the freed-up land for housing.

The property is zoned for “light industry” and any change to that zoning would be a matter for a prospective buyer and the council, spokeswoman Chris Major said.

Sky chief executive Sophie Moloney said many of its employees were “working flexibly between home and the office” and collaborating in new ways.

“As a result, parts of our Mt Wellington campus are under-utilised or no longer fit-for-purpose,” she said.

“The decision to sell these two buildings is consistent with our approach to free up capital to reinvest in areas of the business that create the most value for our customers and shareholders.”

The two properties will be marketed by Colliers New Zealand from next week and comprise 9300 square metres of buildings on the land area of 26,500 square metres.
