Uncle Ben's brown basmati rice recalled due to risk of glass pieces in packets

Mars New Zealand has recalled several batches of its Uncle Ben’s brown basmati due to the possibility of glass in its packets.

The company said it was working with retailers to have the product removed from store shelves.

The affected 250g heat and eat packs were those with best before dates: 16/02/2021, 09/03/2021, 10/03/2021, 09/04/2021, 03/05/2021, 01/06/2021, 02/08/2021, 01/10/2021.

Mars said the affected product should not be consumed, and if purchased already, must be returned to supermarkets for a full refund or exchange.

“This is an isolated incident and that no other Uncle Ben’s products have been affected or are included in the recall, and are safe to consume,” the company said in a release.

A spokeswoman for Countdown said it had issued the recall for the affected products to be taken off shelves on Tuesday afternoon.

Foodstuffs, which owns New World, Pak n Save and Four Square has been approached for comment.

Last month, Mars announced it would stop using the image of a black farmer that featured on Uncle Ben’s packaging following the death of George Floyd in the United States and Black Lives Matter protests.
