The appointment was made by the board and Haier, the Chinese whitewear company and F&P Appliances' majority owner.

In a statement, the company said Broadhurst would take time to consider new challenges, but would help with the transition and that it was part of a planned leadership change.

The company had grown significantly during Broadhurst's tenure, and his 'ambition for the brand and personal drive' had been integral to the company's success, chairman Liang Haishan said.

Fisher & Paykel Appliances delisted from the NZX after a successful takeover bid by Haier in 2012.

However, its sister company F&P Healthcare which makes respiratory devices is still on the board.
