Kiwi influencers are making the big bucks with many having some of the highest rates of engagement in the world.

Georgia McGillivray, founder of influencer marketplace, The Social Club, said Kiwi influencers were innovative and creative with their content and were honing in on their expertise to create high engagement with their followers.

She said up-and-coming influencers had better engagement with their followers than some of the larger players.

'In New Zealand I'd say there is a pool of 10 per cent influencers that everyone knows and and the rest would be up-and-coming,' McGillivray said.

She said there were slightly more female influencers than male in the country.

But that did not necessarily dictate who followed them.

'[Companies must] do their research, because there can be some female influencers that have more of a male following and partnering with them for a beauty brand wouldn't really be beneficial.'

Fast moving consumer goods, tourism, beauty and fashion were the most lucrative markets for influencers, he said.

In the three years since she set up her business, McGillivray said she found that influencers had become more professional in the way they operated.

'Every year it's like a new industry. Influencers are going from being unprofessional to more professional, knowing what to charge, delivering on tasks, drafting content.

'Content should look authentic, not like branded content. A big part of our business has been educating influencers and brands around their strategies for branded content,' McGillivray said.

While there are online tools that show what the average journalist, accountant or lawyer earns, finding what an influencer earns is a little harder.

The Social Club's own earning calculator suggests an influencer with 1000 followers could earn $50 per post, but someone with 150,000 could earn $2375 per post.

But prices vary depending on the brand, the campaign and how much time the content takes.

For example, an Instagram post could pay about $1500, but an Instagram story which only lasts 24 hours would pay about 20 per cent of that, McGillivray said.
