The sun is shining, but Clevedon is still under water

Slips, sodden paddocks and submerged machinery - the aftermath of the Clevedon floods

The sun has come out and skies are clearing across Auckland, but many parts of Clevedon remain under water.

Torrential rain and flooding forced people from their homes and swept away horses, cattle and sheep as rural Clevedon, in the south east of the city, bore the brunt of Wednesday's wild weather.

A month's worth of rain hit in the top of the North Island, and the deluge cut power to thousands of homes and left Clevedon cut-off entirely, as the main roads were flooded.

While the skies are starting to clear, the area surrounding the south Auckland township of Clevedon sits under water.

Some Clevedon residents had to be rescued from their homes during the storm on Wednesday, and a number of people sought refuge in a local church.

One lane of the Clevedon-Kawakawa Rd and Kawakawa-Orere Rd was re-opened on Wednesday afternoon, but several other main roads in the Clevedon area remain closed.

Around 70 homes in the Clevedon-Kawakawa area were still without power on Thursday morning, as Vector was unable to get through the flooding.

A Vector spokeswoman said they were aiming to restore power to the area by midday.
