New zone and pay system for Auckland public transport

Auckland Transport will roll out a new pay and travel system for bus and train passengers on August 14.

New fare tables and colour coded zone maps aimed to make public transport around Auckland easier will be rolled out across the city next month.

Under the new system, passengers with an AT HOP card will pay for one entire journey from A to B instead of paying for each bus or train separately. Transport authorities say the move is designed to make for easier trips for passengers no matter what transport is taken.

During a journey, passengers will be able to use up to five buses or trains within four hours, with a maximum transfer time of 30 minutes between each trip.

Passengers will still tag on and off each bus or train as normal, but will now count the number of zones travelled through to work out the fare.

An AT HOP all-zones monthly pass option will also be available for travel on buses and trains.

The current AT HOP day passes are being replaced with new $18 all-zones passes, valid for travel until midnight on the day of use.

The pass will provide travel on all of Auckland's inner harbour ferry services, trains and buses except SkyBus.

Inner harbour ferry services include Bayswater, Birkenhead, Devonport, Northcote Point and Stanley Bay.

Auckland Transport has also announced a child weekend fare, where passengers with AT HOP cards with child concessions pay 99 cents per journey on weekends and public holidays, regardless pf how many zones travelled.

The new system is due to start August 14.
