One person has died in a fire at a boarding house in south Auckland.

A police spokeswoman said shortly before 6pm a call was received about a building fire on Moa St, in Ōtāhuhu.

A spokesman for Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) confirmed one person had died and the fire had been put out by 6.30pm.

​The fire had broken out on the second floor of the Wembley Private Hotel.

One of the tenants of the hotel had tried to put the fire out with a garden hose, a witness said.

A nearby shop keeper said it looked as if the fire was under control, with about three or four fire engines, as well as police, in attendance, he said.
