New bridge planned for Auckland's Wynyard Quarter
Wednesday, 3 April 2019
A busy pedestrian bridge connecting Auckland's Wynyard Quarter to the Viaduct will be replaced with a spectacular new crossing.
The existing bridge was built as a temporary measure during the 2011 Rugby World Cup. Now at the end of its life, it needs frequent and costly repairs to keep it running smoothly.
Panuku Director Development Allan Young said the replacement bridge, also known as Te Wero, would be more reliable and visually spectacular.
The 'double leaf' design would be reminiscent of modern yacht masts or the wings of a large seabird, he said.

The new bridge design is expected to be 60 per cent lighter to lift than the current one, using far less energy to operate.
It can also be built using smaller, less intrusive cranes.
'It will be a landmark addition to an already thriving neighbourhood and will be something all Aucklanders can be proud of,' Young said.
Auckland Mayor Phil Goff said the proposed bridge reflected the council's commitment to enhancing and transforming the waterfront.
Construction will start in early 2020 and be completed by the end of that year, providing the resource consent was granted by mid-2019.
During construction, a temporary pontoon bridge will be in place for pedestrians to move between Te Wero Island and Viaduct Harbour.
If consent is delayed it could mean the bridge may not be completed in time for the America's Cup.
In that case, the current bridge will be structurally reinforced to withstand the expected increase in visitors and construction will begin after the event.
An upgrade to the bridge has always been a part of the waterfront's plan because the popularity of the area has increased hugely and will continue to do so, regardless of the America's Cup, a spokesperson said.
The cost of the bridge has not been announced.
Drop-in sessions for the public to learn more about the proposed bridge will be held at Karanga Kiosk on Karanga Plaza, Wynyard Quarter.
Dates are April 13 from 9.30am till 10.30am, April 14 from 2.30pm till 4.30pm and April 17 from noon till 2pm.
