Dashcam footage showing an Auckland police officer running a red light has been posted to social media.

The footage, taken at 2.23pm on August 8, was posted on the Shocking Auckland Drivers Facebook page.

It shows the driver of the dashcam proceed through the intersection of Kerrs Rd and Dalgety Dr in South Auckland on a green light.

The police car then turns right into oncoming traffic, narrowly missing the car.

The police car had no sirens or lights on at the time of the near-miss.

Inspector Adam Pyne, of Counties Manukau police, said it was taking the matter very seriously.

'After becoming aware of this from the video footage sent to us, we are making enquiries into this incident and to identify the officer driving the vehicle,' Pyne said.

From the video, the registration number can't be seen so he asked anyone who had any information to contact Manurewa Police on 09 268 5800.

'Driving incidents such as this are not tolerated, no matter who is driving, and we will be treating this matter seriously.'

The video has been viewed more than 3000 times and commented on by concerned members of the public.

One commenter encouraged the poster to report the incident.

Another questioned if the traffic lights were faulty, while another said it was clear from the video that the police officer had run a red light.
