A Northland car crash has brought the Christmas road toll to two.

Police said the person died at the scene after the car crashed on State Highway 14, near Maungatapere, on Saturday at 5.45pm. No other vehicles were involved.

Two other occupants were hurt. Both were taken to Whangarei Hospital, one with serious injuries, the other moderate.

The highway was closed while the Serious Crash Unit investigated.

An early-morning hit-and-run in central Auckland on Saturday triggered the start of the Christmas holiday road death toll.

A taxi driver was killed after the alleged drink-driver ran a red light and smashed into a Toyota Prius on Symonds St, Auckland.

Nineteen people died over the Christmas holiday period last year, which runs from 4pm on December 22 until 6am on January 3.
