One person has died after a serious crash in a small Otago township this morning.

Emergency services were notified of the two-vehicle crash near Letts Gully Rd in Springvale, north of Alexandra, at around 9am this morning.

A Fire and Emergency New Zealand shift manager said two trucks from Clyde and Alexandra and one support vehicle were in attendance.

Crews worked to free one person trapped in a vehicle, they said.

Crews were alerted to black ice at around the same time, but could not confirm if it was a factor in the collision.

Police said initial indications suggested there are serious injuries.

A spokesperson later confirmed that one person has died.

“Sadly, one person was located deceased at the scene,” they said.

“The road remains closed while the Serious Crash Unit conducts a scene examination.

“Motorists are advised to follow diversions and expect delays.”

Hato Hone St John responded with two ambulances.
