New Zealand comedian Melanie Bracewell has outed Australian comic Dave Hughes for urinating in her backstage water glass before a comedy show.

Bracewell, 31, made the allegation on Sunday in a comment on one of her TikTok videos.

“Btw the first time we met he peed in one of my glasses I use for stage bc he couldn’t go out to the bathroom,” Bracewell commented below one of her posts – a video in which she was having a go at Hughes for sending her long political messages on her birthday.

She said it was not an isolated incident.

“He does this regularly and wait staff have to clean it up.”

Speaking to the Daily Mail, Hughes, 55, admitted to urinating in her glass but said he did it to avoid wetting himself before going on stage.

“I’ve done it maybe four times in my life before solo shows when the backstage had no toilet ... I didn’t want to wet myself onstage,” he told the Daily Mail.

“Absolutely never when anyone else was around, that would be terrible! I certainly don’t look for glasses to pee in as a way to pass time.”

Hughes said he had previously been mocked by fellow performers over the habit.

“Peter Helliar had a go at me about it once and I think Mel was in the same venue. I asked her to come on my radio show and roast me about it, she did, we all laughed a lot,” he said.

“I had no idea she was so aghast, she did a great job in joining in on the group ridicule of me, and then we gave her tour and TV show a big plug. I don’t want to feud with another comic over things we laughed about.”

Hughes said he hopes friends would still invite him around.

“What if no one ever invited me anywhere anymore because they think I’m gonna wee in their finest glassware. I promise I won’t. And that’s a real promise, not an Albo promise, I won’t change my position,” he said.

The exchange started after Bracewell shared a series of direct messages from Hughes on her 31st birthday.

The Australian comedian sent her multiple political “essays” via direct messages on Instagram to which Bracewell replied; “it’s my birthday Hughesy I’m not reading all this”.

Hughes has been openly critical of Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, including an appearance on the Today show in which he criticised the Government’s tax reforms, Nine reported.

His appearance and views sparked widespread backlash, with his comments about the capital gains tax prompting Bracewell to take aim at his Melbourne property portfolio.

“You gotta feel for Hughesy, he’s living from his tenants’ paycheck to tenants’ paycheck,” she wrote on X last Thursday.

Bracewell also poked fun at his properties worth millions of dollars.

While the extent of Hughes’ total property holdings is unclear, reports indicate he owns at least two multimillion-dollar Melbourne properties.

According to RealEstate.com.au, he bought a three-bedroom house in St Kilda for A$2.1 million ($2.5m) in 2014 and a five-bedroom house in Elsternwick for A$3.1m ($3.7m) in 2017.
