Lucky escape for elderly couple after crashing car into pool in Sydney

An elderly couple have been saved by their neighbours after their car crashed through a yard in Sydney and plunged into the backyard pool.

Gray's Point residents rushed to help the Russian couple, aged in their 80s, escape the water as neither of them knew how to swim.

The driver claimed he was trying to park his car across the road in their driveway, and pressed the accelerator by mistake, propelling them in the neighbouring property.

The driver was the first to be pulled out through the driver's window, and his wife Svetlana Feldman was pulled from the vehicle shortly after, according to 9News.

Feldman said the incident happened very suddenly.

One neighbour recalled going outside to see what happened, only to end up being part of the rescue effort.

"It just went whoosh! And that was it. We had a saying in Russia: 'I swim like an axe'," she said.

“I come out and they were both still strapped in at the deep end, which is about 7 foot deep," said homeowner Richard Fricker.

“So we floated the car back up to this end, the four foot end, and then... dragged them out of the car so they wouldn’t drown," he told 9News.

The couple were both uninjured, however they weren't completely lucky, as the vehicle was allegedly not insured for the driver.

Their car has since been retrieved from the pool by a crane.
